Traffic on Sajek Road resumes after eight and a half hours

Traffic has resumed in Sajek, Baghaichhari Upazila of Rangamati after about eight and a half hours. Traffic was stopped in the area since Thursday morning due to a landslide. Later, the road was reopened at 2:30 pm. As a result, more than three hundred tourists stranded in Sajek Valley have returned.

Local residents and union council sources said that it has been raining continuously in the area since Wednesday night. A large section of the Baghaihat-Sajek road collapsed in Nandaram area of Sajek around 6 am. On receiving the news, the army, BGB and fire service, residents of Sajek Union Council and the upazila administration started removing soil from the road. The work of removing soil was completed after eight and a half hours. After traffic normalized, at least 76 motorcycles, CNG-powered auto-rickshaws, 22 jeep-pickups stranded in Sajek Valley left Sajek and headed for Baghaihat. There were more than three hundred tourists in these vehicles. Local residents said that tourist vehicles travel from Baghaihat to Ruilui Valley in Sajek every day between 10:30 am and 3:00 pm. At the same time, vehicles also return from Sajek towards Baghaihat. However, these vehicles could not travel until 2:30 pm due to the landslide.

President of Sajek Valley Resort and Cottage Owners Association Surpan Debbarman said that many tourists were stuck in Sajek from morning to noon. The vehicles left Sajek around 2:30 pm as the landslide was removed. At the same time, new tourists from Baghaihat also reached Sajek.

Baghaichhari Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Mirin Akhter said that the army, BGB, fire service and local residents worked to remove the landslide. Traffic on this road has returned to normal after eight and a half hours.
